For over ten years, singer/songwriter Mark Ellis has held fast to the notion
that music should not be limited to just one genre. The key to a successful band
is not to master one sound, but to take the best elements out of multiple genres
and create something completely new. Staying power is not writing the same hit
song over and over, but writing an entirely new hit every time.
In the early 2000s, music began to migrate corporately into two opposing
spectrums: Aggressive Rock and Pop. Mark Ellis, as Alico, began an attempt to
merge these two styles on a middle ground. Taking the Hard Rock elements of
aggressive drum beats and detuned, distorted guitars and blending them with
smooth melody lines that resemble those of Incubus or of the melodious appeal of
Green Day, Alico is set apart by combining these two distinct styles into a
sound that crosses over to incorporate the listening styles and desires of these
two fan bases.
A virtuoso of a wide array of instruments, Mark Ellis wrote and recorded for
every instrument showcased on the “Goodnight California” EP in 2007. This
singer/songwriter is anything but lazy. When there is a lack in instrumentation
for live show, Ellis happily steps up and fills in the gaps.
Ellis is no stranger to the music business. Having relocated coasts twice for
the love of music, Ellis has seen the world of touring, played in multiple
successful bands, and is currently distributing his cds internationally.
For Mark Ellis, music is a very serious subject. Though many hardships have
continually pounded this artist, Ellis makes very clear that no matter what,
Alico’s music will still continue and always evolve.
